It can be scary. It's massive, and worth seeing.
We meet three Arakocra guards, discuss an alliance against Gorefeather harpies, and learn about the Thuellai. On our way to the city under a mountain, we face one of the spirits in combat. The group flees, arrives at the city, and prepares to meet the Horizon in Vol'antim.
Session 54
Three Arakocra stand facing the group, two guards have their bows drawn and the hollow-tipped glowing spear wielder is aggressive toward Prophet. All this in the very early morning, before dawn. We quickly relay information of the fire ashari and needing to find them in the Mount Mentiri; they say they're here because they saw the lights and thought it may have been one of the creatures that live in the mountains.
As he emerges from the tent after Maltheo talks of his "loose magic", Prophet is semi-disguise-self'd as a duck-billed web-footed feather-armed elf, as a way to persuade them of our non-aggression. The bird people are... surprised and say it's not necessary. The feathers on his face and body start fading and morphing into a shorter person; his wings fold back into his armor. Remaining is a small, stout dwarven man with his hair in a messy man-bun. Prophet un-disguise-selfs himself with flair saying he's surprised they saw through his visage.
Briya realizes right away that he must be a werebird.
They mention there could be some sort of alliance with them to join forces against the Gorefeather harpies. It seems their clan has been expanding territory; preying on life on the nearby peaks and others verdant spaces around. A scouting party left for the mount not long ago, and we could be granted access to speak with them when they return, and any other info we might need. They also want to present us to The Horizon, their governing body, which is a council of 12 elders who are members from the most prominent clans.
Klekkag is a priest of the law bearer: a knowledge cleric. He says, "We know their clan has been expanding. Though, we're not quite sure why now, but the conflict is increasing much more than in the past few centuries." He then points to one of the peaks in the distance and says the city is sort of under an outcropping of a peak of that mountain. It's only reachable by flight.
Briya conjures two giant eagles to carry Yahnist and Maltheo, and she herself becomes a huge bat and carries Prophet and Kra'naelen. We have to be careful as we approach as there are creatures on nearby mountains and peaks. "Yes, the ones we suspected may have been Thuellai," he says. (None of us recognize the name) They are wild spirits of the north. Like bestial spirits who ride the winds, freeze the air, and attack you while stunned. They're especially attracted to small packs of prey.
We take flight in unfortunately high winds, heading toward the rising sun in the east to approach the city. Even though we're trying to be stealthy from antagonists, seemingly from nowhere frost starts forming on our extremities, the temperature drops more; flying right under us is a cloud of ice and storm with a feline shape. It's huge in size.
Combat!
Faerie Fire gambit from Cass. It cancels the AOE frost damage but attacks against you have advantage. Yahnist's eagle dies; he falls with Cass. Briya chases too slowly with Kra'naelen and Prophet on her back. Cass casts fly to save Yahnist. The creature leaves due to boredom and knowing that we are not a simple kill.
We head to the city at a very fast pace. Upon arriving, guards check who is coming and going. Kleg puts in a good word for us and tells them we're to meet with the Horizon. But beforehand, we're to rest and clean up at their temple. The entire city worships the law bearer but also, the wild mother, as she is not outlawed here. The temple is an amalgamation of both religions. Two women holding hands. Lovers. Vol'antim we have arrived.
